Theater Students Collaborate with PlayMakers Laboratory to Bring Young Writers’ Stories to Life

Resurrection College Prep’s theater students recently participated in a hands-on creative workshop with PlayMakers Laboratory, a Chicago-based organization that helps elementary students develop reading and writing skills through performance.

PlayMakers Laboratory, known for adapting student-written stories into original sketches and songs performed by professional actors and musicians, has expanded its programming to include high school students. Through this initiative, they aim to teach the art of devising and development—encouraging students to explore storytelling, creativity, and collaboration in new ways.

During the workshop, Resurrection students worked directly with PlayMakers teaching artists to bring elementary students’ stories to life. They explored performance techniques, character development, and creative interpretation while transforming these imaginative tales into short, engaging performances.

“The experience was both inspiring and fun,” shared one student. “It reminded us how powerful creativity can be when stories are shared and performed.”

This partnership provided our students with a meaningful opportunity to connect with the broader Chicago arts community, while also gaining insight into the creative process from concept to stage.

The workshop was a celebration of imagination, collaboration, and the joy of storytelling—values that continue to inspire our growing performing arts program at Resurrection.
