2022-23 Asbestos Letter

2022-23 Asbestos Letter

Dear Parents, Teachers, and all other School Employees:

One of the major requirements under the Federal Asbestos Laws is that each school must notify, in writing, on a yearly basis all parents, teachers, and all other school employees about the presence of asbestos, as well as the availability of their asbestos management plan. This is the reason for this letter.

In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). That law requires all schools, kindergarten through twelfth grade, to be inspected and identify any asbestos-containing building materials. The law further requires the development of a Management Plan, based upon the findings of the inspection, which outlines our intent in controlling the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers in our schools.

In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials, because of its insulating and fire retarding capabilities. Virtually any building built before the late 1970’s contains at least some asbestos in pipe insulation and structural fireproofing. We, too, have areas in our building that contain asbestos material. The primary concerns arise when these materials begin to deteriorate or become damaged.

As of August 2022, Resurrection College Prep High School passed the Illinois Department of Public Health AHERA Three-Year Reinspection of Asbestos Abatement Program. In three years, we will coordinate with the Illinois Department of Public Health to conduct another inspection. Any area identified containing materials in our building are not readily accessible to students. A copy of the inspection report and the management plan is on file with our buildings and grounds department for review if you desire.

Regards,

Ms. Colleen Brewer
