Called to Serve: Junior MaryJane Allen Enlists in the Illinois Army National Guard

Resurrection College Prep proudly recognizes Junior MaryJane Allen on her recent enlistment in the Illinois Army National Guard.

MaryJane has committed to the Split Option Program, which allows her to serve one weekend a month during the school year, typically on Saturday and Sunday, while attending basic training during the summer before her senior year. During her senior year, she will take on a leadership role, helping train younger recruits as she continues drilling with her unit.

Service runs deep in MaryJane’s family. She was sworn in by her father, Lt. Col. Linden Allen, who serves in the Illinois Army National Guard. Her uncle, Maj. Tristan Allen, who also serves in the Illinois Army National Guard, stood proudly beside them for the ceremony. The moment reflected a strong family legacy of leadership, commitment, and dedication to serving others.

When asked what inspired her decision, MaryJane shared, “I felt determined to join because the Illinois National Guard has great values of leadership and changing you into a better person. My dad is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard.”

Her experience so far has already challenged and strengthened her. “My training experiences so far have been amazing. I have learned that I can push myself way further than my mind will let me,” she said.

Balancing school, military service, and a part-time job requires discipline and focus. “I balance being a student at Res, being in the National Guard, and having a part-time job by working hard and having good time management skills that the military taught me.”

Looking ahead, MaryJane has ambitious goals. “My goals are to complete my contract with the National Guard, then switch to an Active soldier, which is full-time to deploy and travel the world. I would give advice to fully understand what you're signing up for before you sign up, and talk to many people currently in the military to understand their perspectives and experiences.”

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. SFC Devian Ruiz, Station Commander, shared: “In my 15 years as a recruiter and military college and career counselor for the Illinois Army National Guard, it’s rare to come across a young soldier with the level of focus and motivation that MJ demonstrates. It was truly an honor to guide a young woman with whose resilience and drive are contagious across the entire unit.

Mary Jane is exactly the kind of soldier who reminds me why I chose this career, and I am incredibly proud to have played a role in her journey. I look forward to watching her grow into a leader and become an asset not only to the Illinois Army National Guard, but her peers and her community.”
