Mr. Longo's Spring Course

Class Overview: This class will reflect upon the final days of Jesus in Jerusalem as found in the Gospel of Mark. We will examine Jesus’ mission of bringing God’s Kingdom of Justice to earth, which ultimately led to his suffering (passion) on the cross. Mark is the earliest Gospel, the first narrative account of Jesus’ final week. Like all of the Gospels, Mark’s narrative is a combination of history remembered and history interpreted for the time in which Mark’s community lived. We will examine the events in this final week and Jesus’ teaching of God’s Kingdom of Justice reflecting on what they mean for us as Christians living in the 21st century. Two processions entered Jerusalem around the year of 30 C.E.: one was a peasant procession, the other an imperial procession. The question for us as we begin Holy Week is which procession do we identify with and join?
