Those of us who were born and grew up in America take our democratic form of government for granted. Our founding fathers would not have shared this attitude because they knew how fragile this unique form of government was in their time.  Democracy continues to be unique today. The adult enrichment course will examine some of the real threats to the democratic process of government in our country and in other democratic countries.

Mr. Mike Longo will incorporate observations and thoughts he had after attending author David Brooks' 2019 discussion at the Chicago Humanities Festival about his book,  The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life. Course participants will explore how the democratic process requires that citizens move from the "first mountain" of individualism and tribalism to the "second mountain" of interdependence and community.

The following books will be utilized for this course:
How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky & Daniel Ziblatt, 2018
Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America by Kathleen Belew, 2018
The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life by David Brooks, 2019

The cost is $50 per person.
To register, contact Laura Dennis at ldennis@reshs.org or 773.775.6616 Ext 136.
